EarthEnable is a revolutionary construction platform that trains local masons to create resilient earthen floors. In 2013, four Stanford students, along with their partner organization The Mass Design Group, traveled to Rwanda for the class “Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability.” The goal of the trip was to design a product or service that could improve the health of homes or communities. After researching how substandard homes were impacting physical and mental health, they were alarmed to discover how detrimental dirt floors were. By replacing a dirt floor with an earthen one, instances of childhood asthma, diarrhea, malnutrition, and parasitic infestations could be drastically reduced.
